Nucatraz Guard Quarters - Friends in Hell

The recruits scurried up and down the quarters, unpacking their valuables swiftly to assemble in the Nucatraz Operations Room to avoid the censure of their superior. All of the candidates had an air of discipline and professionalism to them; they performed their duties in a superior manner in a constant basis. Nucatraz picked the most qualified individuals that could handle the unforgiving sh*thole this place was.

Even with all these measures, there were still glaring weaknesses. The guards always complained about their pay and their safety. Nobody could blame them, because they were sticking their neck out for the people while their throats could be slit by a multiple murderer or an almighty idiot. The containment systems for the villains weren't always 100% secure, since the government had to cut costs due to the general sh*tty condition of the economy. As grim as this reality is, each and every one of the guards came here for a reason and they were as batsh*t insane as the inmates. In one way or another each man voluntarily signed themselves on for Nucatraz.

Harvey placed his duffel bag on his bunk, and by pure chance alone bumped into another guard with the nametag 'Henri Jeter'.

"Sorry," Harvey was the first to speak, he may be cynical but he is outwardly polite.

"That's all right," Henri replied curtly and brushed past by to select a bunk.

"Hey," Harvey called out to him before he could vanish from out of sight.

"What?" Henri turned to face Harvey.

"Let's talk sometime," Harvey said, he needed to form a clique of his own if he was to survive in this prison, "After all, no man is an island."

"Sure, I know what's on your mind."

The rest of the guards were doing the same thing. It was wise to work in a group with somebody watching your back.

Nucatraz Operations Room - Everybody is a Prisoner in Nucatraz

The recruits finished arranging their baggage in their new quarters and assembled in the Operations Room where they confronted their squad leader, a middle-aged man with a badass mustache, his nametag read as 'John Ciardi'. Every guard in Nucatraz was assigned to a squad so that they would be able to delegate certain tasks to particular squads. This would also give them the advantage of mingling with their peers to build trust among themselves.

Harvey observed John Ciardi, letting his natural social instincts take over while shooting wild ass guesses and praying one theory worked. His back was bent, a sign of sloppiness for well-trained professionals, but it could also indicate a lack of confidence. His face was unkempt, dirt stuck to his face like glue. He seemed like a man with a broken past, it was probably because of the prison. He had a large gash on the side of his face as if he wrestled with a savage beast with sharp claws. His mood was sober but gloomy. He walked with a slow, steady gait as if he was contemplating the very existence of humanity itself. The man was melancholic and philosophical. Finally he stopped and faced his new squad.

John Ciardi began with a simple speech based on his early experiences.

"Nucatraz doesn't care where you came from or if your daddy went golfing with the President once. There is one thing that Nucatraz cares about, it cares about you dead, it wants to kill you. This is a fact. Many guards have died in the line of duty and the only compensation that they got from their sacrifice is a botched paycheck. Just three months ago one of my old friends had his guts torn apart by a mad serial killer. Just three weeks ago I witnessed a riot break out that left 10 dead with my best friend lying on the floor like a broken rag doll. Just three days ago, three guards were cornered by one of the prison's most dangerous villains and they killed themselves so they could be spared from the horror of this madman. Nucatraz will break you. Nucatraz will kill you. Nucatraz is not a prison for the prisoners but for the guards as well. Ladies and gentlemen, you are now officially welcome to Nucatraz."

Well, that was inspiring. Harvey thought.

"If you are having second thoughts about this, I suggest you leave this room immediately and never come back. There is a patrol boat that regularly travels to California, so you better hop in and get the hell out of this place."

No one moved, they had journeyed from all of California to get this job so they better keep it.

"Bullsh*t," John said, "You're not guards, you're just a prisoner like the rest of these criminals. If you want to be a guard then you better prove it not just to me, not just to Nucatraz, but to the entire world. If you want to be a guard then shut up and do your job. If you truly want to be a guard then you must protect the people who hate us, you must fight for the system that persecutes us, you must never give up and show the world that you're better than a hero, you're a guardian of the people."

John looked at each recruit straight in the eye.

"That's what it means to be a guard. We stand because we are the only ones who can do it. We fight because even if there is so much hate in this world, there is a world worth loving. We are better than heroes not just because we don't have powers and still fight despite that, it's because we answer the call of duty... we answer the cry of our people!"

His speech was interrupted when a guard named Bernard Shaw walked towards him and whispered in his ear. John was aghast, they were to send a squad of newbies into the fray when there were supers there to take care of the job? Bernard said that he couldn't do anything, this order was from the brass.

"Well, f*ck me sideways," John faced his squad of 14 guards, "It looks like we're heading straight into the LA Subway System to contain the situation there. There's a self-styled loli called China Doll that thinks she can f*ck society. In that case, we will f*ck her harder."

A CH-47 Chinook was waiting for the squad to board onto the helicopter to transport the squad as near as the LA subway system as possible, where they would bust in the lolita and send her to justice.
