I read this mainly because I had already bought both books and the first one ended in a massive cliffhanger, rather than a compelling narrative. I appreciate that I'm not the targeted audience, but I feel that a good book is a good book, regardless, and this just didn't pull me in. It's disappointing, mainly because there was such a furore about the book in Waterstones' newsletters. In the end, it just fell flat. Children might be more inclined to be kind towards it, but I sincerely doubt.

This book is wonderful! But is very sad at the end. I hope the rest of them all transform into human. This book was a great read and I recommend. If you hate sad stories then just so you know it can be sad the first one and the second. Overall I recommend this book

Great middle grade adventure novel. Lessons of selflessness, loyalty, and courage, with an epic battle finale. My daughter is already anxious for the sequel. Hope it will be translated and published in English soon. Looks like there are six novels in Chinese.

This second book is very good. Dilah makes some mistakes. But at least he's learning. I didn't realise (until it was pointed out) that becoming human involves reincarnation and thereby you must die. I am concerned that the only females in the book turn out to be cunning and deceptive. (is this deliberate?) While we only find out about Dilah's transition, I genuinely hope that the others (Ankel, Little Bean, Egg and Tyrone) were reincarnated as well. The most devastating death is of Little Bean. Cried so hard and then all the others died. You know it's coming but still so hard when it actually happens.

I loved the first book and I liked this one. It wasn't as good as the first one but I still liked this one a lot. We meet a few new characters and a few old ones come back - like Egg. Egg was great. I wish that he came back sooner. I also loved Tyrone's backstory. I wasn't a fan of Alsace suddenly doing complete 180 and going from being the bad and jealous guy to suddenly being on Dillah's side though. And I also wasn't a fan of Emily. She saves them from Alsace, she joins them on their quest then sacrifices herself to save them and tells them that she was in fact Alsace's spy all along - I just didn't like her character. She joined and died way too fast for me to get attached to her and I couldn't feel sad when Dillah grieved for her and thought about her later in the book. I also wasn't a huge fan of Dillah's decisions in this book - he seemed so smart and wise for a fox cub in the first book yet in this one, he grows up and he makes some really stupid and pointless decisions along the way. And he mentions over and over how Ankel is a smart guy and how he knows everything but when Ankel grows suspicious and doesn't trust Opal or Emily who both later turn out bad (even though Emily gets redeemed) Dillah just doesn't listen and blindly trusts them anyways. The ending was intriguing and good though. They reach the cave, the tests are interesting and they show the strengths of the group and their bonds grow, the final battle is amazing and fast paced - and I love the ending when Dillah finally goes through the gates of the reincarnation - we don't see him become human so I am not sure if there will be a sequel or not but I still liked this book and the series so far- even though I much prefer the first book just because it had better more fleshed out characters and Dillah was a better protagonist than he was in this one. Overall this was still a decent book and I loved learning more about Chinese lore and reincarnation. And the illustrations are simply gorgeous like in the first book. I love this style - not too detailed but not too simplistic - they really add to the magic of the story.

Middle grade animal fiction that my son insisted I read. Book 2 is significantly better than book 1, but really they should have published this as one book.
Arctic Fox Dilah and his strange band of friends (weasel, rabbit and panda) continue his quest, to find a treasure that grants transformation into a human. There is plenty of adventure and peril and they journey right across a continent to the sea and onwards to Fox Island. Humour too when the friends are drawn into an animal beauty pageant that Dilah, of course, wins, giving them a map to the enchanted forest.
As the quest unfurls, it is revealed that to become human, the animal must die and be reborn in human form. This horrific reality does not phase our trusty companions in the slightest and they continue on with undimmed determination. They meet up with Egg the seal again, face 5 challenges and get the 'collar of resurrection' that none of the animals hesitate in putting on, condemning themselves to death within 3 days. Carl and his baddies show up at the end, plus humans with guns and a ghastly bloodbath ensues at the end of which, Dilah flings himself off the mountain to plunge to his death into the sea far, far below. Just for good measure, the humans manage to shoot him several times. The book ends with Dilah about to emerge into the world as a newborn human.
Fairy tale with a strong Chinese flavour.

This middle-grade book is about a group of animals on a mission to be transformed into humans. Our main character had the important moonstone, but they had many hoops to jump through; places to find and puzzles to solve. There is danger, enchanted forests and lots of talking animals, perfect for readers at the younger end of this middle-grade. I was very keen to read this book when I heard that it was a translated from Chinese. If I hadn't known about this fact, I would not have spotted it in the text. In some ways I am curious to read the original version as this book had some very 'English' expressions eg "You old codger!". Nonetheless, despite its origin, the story sends out messages that are universal, eg values like courage and kindness, or that we are all unique and beautiful in our own way. I was not aware that this was book two in the series. I did not read the first book but there was a page at the start that introduced me to all that I had missed, so I was able to pick up the book and carry on with the adventure. Opening line : The guard fox snorted awake as the slender female fox approached him, her coat gleaming red in the moonlight.

A quest for a treasure that will turn a fox into a human if they have the moonstone for guidance and some very good luck and skills finding the treasure. The animals have some very human qualities which require the suspension of disbelief on the part of the reader. White Fox travels with his friends, a rabbit and a weasel, and lots of advice from older foxes as they track down the treasure, fight evil and magic, and so much more. While I enjoy reading books for teens and tweens, this one defeated me. I did like the illustrations. Translated from the Chinese, it's book two in the series. An amazing sequel, with whimsical magical elements that'll make you dream. We follow that beautiful heart warming friendship that began in the first book. Some passages really made me wanna cry but it always had a touch of hope. Can't wait for the next book to release.

I did not enjoy this book. It seemed to drag on and on with so many twists and turns, it was hard to keep everything straight. It took me way too long to finish it because it just did not keep me interested. Maybe if I had read the first book, I would be more invested in this story.

That ending, man. Bullet review: Full review at: https://skybookcorner.blogspot.com/20...
+Likable and interesting characters. Ning the panda is a nice addition to the main cast and I liked Emily. Dilah is still a good (and flawed) protagonist.
+A great adventure full of emotion.
+Very intense climax (maybe a bit too intense for younger readers?)
-Not a lot of great representation of female characters. Closest we get is Emily but she is .
-Some tonal issues. While I loved the intense climax, it feels a bit at odds with some of the earlier, more goofy scenes in the book (like an animal beauty contest).

I liked the first book enough to read the second part and I am glad I did, although it dragged a little in the middle. I actually thought the story was coming to an end and realized I still had quite a bit to go. It did pick up and had an exciting ending. I was also glad for the return of Egg. Very adventuresome, and nice camaraderie between the animals. I think younger readers would really enjoy this series.
