1 Research and analyze

Before you start sketching or modeling, you need to do some research and analysis. You need to understand the context, the site, the program, the users, the regulations, and the challenges of your project. You also need to study the existing examples, precedents, trends, and best practices in your field. You need to gather as much information and inspiration as possible, and then synthesize it into a clear and coherent design brief. This will help you identify the problems, the opportunities, the constraints, and the goals of your project.

2 Brainstorm and experiment

Once you have a design brief, you can start brainstorming and experimenting. You can use various techniques, such as mind mapping, sketching, diagramming, collaging, prototyping, or 3D modeling, to generate and explore different ideas. You can also collaborate with other architects, designers, engineers, or consultants, to get feedback and input. You can try to combine, modify, or invert existing solutions, or to create new ones from scratch. You can challenge yourself to think outside the box, to question the assumptions, and to break the rules.

I like the method of the morphological box, breaking down the whole design into subtopics, finding solutions for these ones and when pickkinv the best fitting ones. This avoids the trap of thinking the first solution is the best on. Experimentation and iterations are key.

3 Evaluate and refine

After you have a range of ideas, you need to evaluate and refine them. You need to test them against the design brief, the criteria, and the standards of your project. You need to assess their feasibility, viability, sustainability, and desirability. You need to compare and contrast their strengths and weaknesses, their pros and cons, their advantages and disadvantages. You need to select the best idea, or the best combination of ideas, that meets the requirements and expectations of your project.

4 Communicate and justify

Finally, you need to communicate and justify your design concept. You need to present it in a clear and compelling way, using drawings, models, renderings, animations, or other media. You need to explain the concept, the rationale, the process, and the outcome of your design. You need to highlight the innovation and the edge of your design concept, and how it responds to the context, the site, the program, the users, and the challenges of your project. You need to persuade your audience that your design concept is the best solution for your project.

I love Design Competitions...sometimes, the time to send an entry is a challenge, though. But creativity and innovation are a must in these Contests. Two ideas to help: contextualization and hybridization.Contextualize your design solution to current environmental problems. This makes them more valuable, engaging, and cutting-edge in terms of its relevanceHybridize your design solutions by combining theories and concepts from different disciplines. For example, working on a Ship port? Combine urban farming and renewable technology to create a floating structure. Be broad-minded, find fields that intersect and design a relevant solution that engages hybrid strategies to solve real problems within a global or local context.
