Thursday's area roundup: Freshman Hangar leads Salem tennis to marathon win (2024)

BOYS TENNIS

Salem 3, Bishop Fenwick 2: In a three-hour match, freshman Finn Hangar persevered for a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win at second singles, rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the third set for the win to highlight a solid showing for the Witches. Eden McLain added a win at third singles, 6-0, 6-1, with the second doubles team of William Towne and Austin Ryan also securing a 6-2, 6-4 decision.

St. John’s Prep 5, Lynnfield 0: The Eagles’ record (14-0) remained spotless as John DeAngelis (6-3, 4-6, 10-7), Jack Prokopis (6-0, 6-0) and Luke Free (6-0, 6-0) won in singles. Clean sweeps came at both doubles spots as Luke Prokopis and Boris Kouzminov, as well as Mark McDuffee and Alex Melville, all breezed to easy wins.

GIRLS TENNIS

Peabody 5, Winthrop 0: The Tanners got victories from Jessica Chau (6-3, 6-2), Valentina Goga (6-0, 6-0), Yasmine Giacalone (6-1, 6-3) and Theodosia Kourtelidis/Jill McGrath (6-0, 6-0) plus Vanessa Kolani/Argiro Psyhogios (6-2, 6-1).

Beverly 5, Swampscott 0: Adeline Kontos (6-0, 6-3), Olivia Devereaux (6-2, 6-3), Grace Adams (6-1, 6-2) and the first doubles teams of Ella McAleer and Clea Shumria (6-2, 6-2) won in straight sets. The second doubles team of Sophia Gallo and Elina Savoia battled Swampscott twins Ava and Alexi O’Donnell before also prevailing, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 in a tiebreaker.

Bishop Fenwick 5, Salem 0: Gwen Schroeder (6-0, 6-0), Callie Reed (6-2, 6-1), Caroline O’Hare (6-0, 6-2), Lacey Murphy and Ari Summa (6-1, 6-0), and Jackie Dormer and Kit Wichroski (6-0, 6-0) all won in straight sets for the Crusaders.

BASEBALL

Peabody 2, Masconomet 0: Freshman righthander Dylan Cunningham struck out nine and fired a 1-hit shutout to send the Tanners (15-2) to their 12th consecutive win and clinch the NEC Lynch title. Cunningham worked around six walks and got offensive support from senior captain Mike Petro (two hits) and junior Noah Crocker (two hits). Drew Gustafson pitched very well for Masco (11-5), going six innings and allowing no earned runs and catcher Anthony Cerbone had his team’s lone hit.

Essex Tech 7, Manchester Essex 0: Junior captain Cole Waterman fired seven shutout innings and helped himself with a hit to deliver a huge win for the Hawks. Junior Jack Tsoutsouras drove home three rune while Dan Greenfield and Xavier Parsons had momentous hits. Junior Devin Neal also played well in his first varsity start.

Pentucket 8, Hamilton-Wenham 4: The Generals (10-6) plated three in the top of the sixth to make it a one run game but the Panthers responded with three of their own to pull away. Gian Gamelli had a pair of hits for H-W while Galen Clark-Goldfeld doubled and drove in three runs.

Triton 9, Ipswich 2: Nate Baise singled and scored on a wild pitch while Ethan Hanson earned an RBI on a bases loaded walk for the Tigers. James Norris allowed just one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief while Graham McNamara tossed a scoreless inning as well.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

St. John’s Prep 3, Winchester 1: Michael Wagner had 23 kills and the Eagles rattled off three straight sets to grab a big 21-25, 25-20, 28-26, 25-22 victory. Tighe Lusk added 12 kills and Jayden Pelletier totaled 17 spikes.

GIRLS TRACK

Chieftains win: Masconomet toppled Gloucester in Senior Day led by senior event winners Caroline Losee (high jump), Lauren Boughner (long jump) Lilly Podgurski (triple jump), Sophia Doumas (shot put and discus), Remmi Cote (javelin), Angelina Zepaj (hurdles) and Ella Bernard (2-mile).

Seniors Nora Duval, Lauren Boughner, Brooke Appelstein and Caroline Losee won the 4x100 Relay. Other winners for Masco included Samia Lalikos (100) Piper Testa (200) Savannah Stevens (400), Ella Alberta (800) and Madison Gibeau-Schmitt (mile).

SOFTBALL

Marblehead 14, Winthrop 0: Tessa Francis threw her third no-hitter of the year and this one was a five inning perfect game with 12 strikeouts on Wednesday. Marblehead (13-1) got two hits each by Luka Bornhorst ,Hailey Schmitt, Ruby Calienes and Sophia Hailsey.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Bishop Fenwick 18, Winthrop 2: Molly Sullivan scored five goals, Breanna Genzale added four with one assist, and Kiley Bloom finished with three strikes and two helpers to power the Crusaders under the lights at home. Hannah Bettencourt also scored three times with one assist, Ruby Cahill notched two goals, and Lauren Woods one. Goalie Courtney McKenzie stopped five shots for the victory.

Beverly 17, Gloucester 2: A dozen different players had goals for the Panthers (14-4), led by Lily Shea’s three goals and one assist. Sasha Miller (assist), Lindsay Kaszynski and Madeline LeBlanc each had two tallies; Joselyn Silva had one with two assists; Lauren Caley had one with one helper; and single scores came from Elliot Lund, Morgan Linskey, Samantha Sprissler, Abby Whiting, Julianna O’Connor, and Annabelle Miller. Madeline Reynolds finished with four saves.

Swampscott 9, Masconomet 7: Avery Laundry had a goal and three assists as the Big Blue (11-2) prevailed. Cecilia Tripp and Sophia Ciccioti both scored twice for the victors, with Chloe Puzzo adding a goal and two assists. Fiona Keaney and Coco Clopton both contributed a goal and an assist, Victoria Pierro added a goal of her own, and netminder Lilah Caplan stopped 10 shots.

Hannah Coleman had five of Masconomet’s seven goals, with Caitlin Driscoll scoring the other two as well as one assist.

Ipswich 13, Essex Tech 3: Allie Wile scored three times with one assist and Halle Greenleaf had a 2-goal, 4-assist outing kept the Tigers (11-1) rolling. Lily Cummings (2), Lyla Greenleaf, Lucy Winthrop, Estelle Gromko, Taryn Desmond, Ella Stein and Keira McPartlin also scored. Greenleaf (2) and Winthrop also had assists.

BOYS LACROSSE

Danvers 19, Salem 7: Sophom*ore Cooper Dunham erupted for six goals and three assists to give the Falcons a resounding win. Sean Rivard also tore it up with five goals and two assists; Connor Harvey scored three times; and Tommy Cyr and Jake Ryan both had two tallies and three assists. Brady Tersolo (2 assists) also had a goal, Lucas Goulet had one assist, and goalies Ryan Rogers made eight saves while faceoff ace Evan Roach won 21-of-26 draws.

Andreas Bernal put home three goals for Salem (3-13), Mikey Curtin added two with one assist, and Gabe Bennett and AJ Alessi also scored. Jake Lister earned an assist and goalie Vince Milano made 15 saves.
