Application procedure

The application procedure consists of several steps:

1. Apply online: under every job posting, you will see an application button. Click on the button to open the application form which will allow you to upload your resume and motivation letter. If there are currently no suitable vacancies, you are always welcome to submit an an open application. After submitting your application, you will receive an automatic confirmation by e-mail.
2. Resume and motivation letter selection: we will decide whether you would be a good fit for our organization and the vacancy based on your resume and motivation letter before inviting you for an initial interview. If we choose not to invite you to come in for an interview, we will notify you via e-mail. We strive to provide applicants feedback within two weeks.
3. Job interview: depending on the position you are applying for, you will have to come in for one or two job interviews. These interviews are often held with your future supervisors and members of the research group or research facility. You may also be invited to present your previous work.
4. Assessment/Screening: some positions may require an assessment and/or a screening in order to comply with laws and regulations. Our HR department will support you throughout this process.
5. Starting work: if you and your supervisor are in agreement, you will receive a job offer and terms of employment. You will receive this job offer through an e-mail from the HR Department.


Starting Work and Onboarding

Starting your work at the NKI
When you join the NKI, the HR Services department will handle the administrative processing. You will receive an e-mail or letter containing your contract and all relevant forms, as well as an invitation to attend an informational meeting. Please wait patiently until you receive a message about your application from us. There is nothing you will need to do at this time. Onboarding
Before their first day of work, you will get access to a platform through which new employees can learn more about the culture of the NKI. Afterwards, new employees will follow an onboarding course via the learning portal containing mandatory safety and security training.

Introduction Day
Every second Tuesday of the month, the NKI organizes an introduction day for all new NKI employees. The HR Services department will e-mail you an invitation for this event two weeks in advance. During this Introduction Day, one of our staff members will welcome you and you will learn a lot about the NKI.

Your Terms of Employment

Collective Labor Agreement
Your employment contract is based on a Collective labor Agreement; this Collective Labor Agreement for Hospitals applies to nearly every employee at the NKIThe conditions outlined in this collective labor agreement apply to your contract as well as the pay grading of the job. Working Hours
At the NKI, a full-time work week totals 36 hours. You can discuss how you want to organize your work with your supervisor.

Annual Leave
Full-time employees at the NKI are entitled to 144 leave (holiday) hours per year. In addition, full- time employees receive 57 PLB (Personal Life-stage Budget) hours annually. These are extra statutory hours that, just like vacation hours, can be used for leave. Part-time employees receive annual leave hours and PLB hours on a pro rata basis. Unlike other countries, sick leave will not be not deducted from your holiday hours in the Netherlands. Public holidays are not deducted from the 144 holiday hours.

Vacation Allowance and Year-End Bonus
Employees receive a vacation allowance amounting to 8.33% of the salary earned at the NKI during the last 12 months. The vacation allowance is paid out in May. You will also receive a year-end bonus. This year-end bonus, paid out in December, amounts to 8.33% of the salary earned at the NKI throughout that calendar year.

Commuting Expenses Reimbursem*nt
Employees will receive a compensation of € 0.19 per kilometer for their travel expenses, regardless of their chosen mode of transport.

Employees commuting to the NKI via public transport are eligible for a discount on a travel subscription with the NS and the GVB. Employees commuting to Amsterdam by train can apply for an NS business card for a 4% discount on their commute. Employees using GVB public transport areeligible for a 2% discount on their travel.

Flexible Employee Benefits
With our Flexible Employee Benefits (MKA) Scheme, you can choose extra terms and conditions of employment in exchange for part of your gross salary. We offer arrangements for settling trade union contributions, additional leave hours, and purchasing a bicycle.


Pensioenfonds Zorg & Welzijn (pension fund for the healthcare and social welfare sectors)
NKI employees build a pension with Pensioenfonds Zorg & Welzijn (PfZW). All new NKI employees will be signed up for this pension fund. The PfZW automatically registers the spouses or registered partners of our employees as well. More information about this pension fund can be foundon the PFZW website.


Collective Income Insurance
In the event of full or partial work incapacity, many employees will face a sharp decline in their income. On an individual level, it can be both difficult and costly to prevent this decline in income. With a collective scheme, dealing with such a decline in income can be both more affordable and favorable conditions. NKI has taken out collective insurance for all its employees against a decline in income due to work incapacity with Loyalis.


Additional Opportunities for Employees
In addition to the terms of employment stated in the Collective Labor Agreement, the NKI offers its employees a variety of extras. Please find information about several supplementary schemes below.


Housing for NKI Employees
Given that Amsterdam is a popular city to live in, it may be difficult to find a home in the vicinity of our hospital. The NKI can help new employees find a place to stay. Our organization offers 17 furnished apartments for rent; all split into two studios. Every apartment is occupied by two different Netherlands Cancer Institute employees. You have your own private room, but the bathroom, kitchen, and balcony are shared. The living units at the Louweshoek Residential Center consist of smaller (15 m²) and larger rooms (22 m²). Rent prices include gas, water, electricity, real estate tax, and Wi-Fi. Rooms at the Louweshoek Residential Complex are available for a maximum period of one year.The Expat Centre can help you find housing in Amsterdam. Health Insurance
Every person living or working in the Netherlands is legally obliged to take out a standard health insurance package to cover the cost of consulting a general practitioner, hospital treatment and prescription medication, etc. You may also opt to take out additional insurance to cover costs not included in the standard package. For more information, please visit this government website. NKI employees can apply for a collective discount with the following three insurance companies:

1. IZZ | VGZ for the Care Sector
The group discount is incorporated in the basic package and the IZZ Zorg voor de Zorg; extra 1, 2, or 3 is also offered as an employer & contribution . Please register with the IZZ within one month of your starting date. A condition for acceptance by the IZZ is that your current health insurer will
release you from its contract. The collectivity code for IZZ is 29500. For more information or to sign up for this collective healthcare insurancecontact the VGZ (only available in Dutch).

2. Zilveren Kruis | Achmea
To sign up, go to Zilveren Kruis Achmea (in English) or here (in Dutch).
Alongside this group discount for the basic package, Zilveren Kruis offers broader reimbursem*nt with ‘extra supplementary care’. If you are already insured with Zilveren Kruis, please contact the company to qualify for this employee discount. The collectivity code is: 207075728, employer: Antoni van Leeuwenhoek.

3. Zorg & Zekerheid
For more information about Zorg & Zekerheid or to sign up go to: https://www.zorgenzekerheid.nl/english.htm. If you are already insured with Zorg & Zekerheid, you can also profit from our collective agreements by linking your current policy to the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek collectivity. The Collectivity code is 35751 or enter the name Antoni van Leeuwenhoek or AVL.

Various Supplemental Insurance Policies
Centraal Beheer Achmea offers employees of the Netherlands Cancer Institute various insurance policies at discounted rates. Tax benefits
Expats may be eligible for extra tax reduction. Under certain conditions, around 30% of the gross income will not be taxed. The expat center can help you to apply for this tax reduction if we think you are eligible.
