For Those That Have Rebuilt…

As someone who is in the early stages of rebuilding, I've put a lot of thought into this and would love your feedback.

In the beginning of a rebuild we spend a lot of time on the boards researching, formulating a plan, calculating a budget, and chipping away at our baddies like Andy Dufresne. As time goes on, we start to obsessively check our CMS's in the hopes of instant gratification as we see our scores slowly climb - 2 points here, 3 points there. It's rewarding to cross things off your list and it gives you the determination to keep going.

But what happens when you've done all you can do? The collections and CO's have been settled or PIF (hopefully with a PFD,) your utilization on current CC's has been brought down with AZEO, and you're now socking away money in an emergency fund for the future. You did it. With the exception of GW saturation, all you can do now is wait for whatever baddies are left to age and eventually fall off while you nurture your current "goodies."

So, myFICO friends, which part of the rebuild was more mentally difficult? The early stages of planning and executing, or the later stages of waiting and waiting?

Tom Petty says the waiting is the hardest part.

Re: For Those That Have Rebuilt…

I am at the stage right now where I have taken care of all my CO's and everything else that is under my control. Brought all my cards down to zero, and am sitting right at the 690-710 marks on all 3 and the only thing I can do now is wait. So i would say the waiting part is the hardest right now because i got all the instant gratification of paying my charge offs, paying down my balances and getting the 5,10,20,50 point jumps in my scores from starting in the high 500s. Now its just a waiting game til either a good will letter finally works for some late payments or until the baddies age off

Re: For Those That Have Rebuilt…

You've really answered your own question. The one thing people have absolutely no control over and have the hardest time dealing with is waiting on the calender/time to do it's thing.

The other big mistake I've seen a lot of people make is trying to add too many new accounts, too soon. I guess their thinking is that if they have more good accounts, that will help... but that's not how it works. Patience is one of the greatest attributesone can have in this particular game.

Just my 2¢

Re: For Those That Have Rebuilt…

@MissLiz, I took a different path to my rebuild, I filed a Chapter 13 in 2015 and had to wait for my discharge in 2020 to start rebuilding. When the rebuild started I was in the very low 600s from a FICO perspective; I got the requisite three cards and an SSL and then I waited for the 7-years to pass from my filing to see a clean credit report.

For me, the hardest part was seeing my scores pop up into the 800s across the board, only to take a pretty hard hit when I applied for a few new credit cards, a vehicle loan, and now a mortgage. I don't know where they're going to bottom out because I closed on our new house less than a month ago, so I may not see the final damage until my credit reports post in early July, but I'm guessing they'll level off in the low- to mid-700s.

Chapter 13:

  • Burned: AMEX, Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and South County Bank (now Bank of Southern California)
  • Filed: 26-Feb-2015
  • MoC: 01-Mar-2015
  • 1st Payment (posted): 23-Mar-2015
  • Last Payment (posted): 07-Feb-2020
  • Discharged: 04-Mar-2020
  • Closed: 23-Jun-2020

I categorically refuse to do AZEO!

Re: For Those That Have Rebuilt…

What is too many accounts? I helped someone rebuild starting from 03/2023 and has added a total of 2 personal loans, 11 cards that total 30k in credit. He now sits at 800 FICO and all of his cards age at or about the same time. Started with score undetermined.

There's no FICO score penalty for having too many accounts, at least I've never seen it reported.

My opinion, it's subjective and really depends on your comfort level with being able to manage payments, credit limits, etc..

I figured as much. I was hoping to hear, "No, no! You're doing the hard part now. Once your done, you can just sit back and relax!" 😂

Another thing to consider, adding a couple of cards at the beginning of a rebuild can be very beneficial for score growth. Plus, you can count on those account to age and the INQ's to fall off right around the time you get a clean scorecard.

I think this scenario counts more as a build rather than a rebuild, but excellent results!
