The biggest Minecraft project is Build the Earth, an ambitious community-driven effort to recreate the entire planet in Minecraft (2011, Mojang). The project was started by Minecraft YouTuber "PippenFTS" (USA) in March 2020 with the release of a video asking for build contributions from the wider Minecraft community. Now, with the help of over four thousand builders and hundreds of build teams, Build the Earth dwarfs any other Minecraft project both in terms of number of people involved and scale.Build the Earth uses a modification called Cubic Chunks to shoot through Minecraft’s height limit of 255 metres and enabling the replication of the world on a 1:1 scale, with one block in Minecraft equating to roughly one metre in the real world. In addition, Build the Earth uses a mod called Terra 1-1 to pull information from geographic data services such as Google Maps and automatically generate terrain.Significant progress has already been made. As of the end of 2022, Build the Earth had 4839 ongoing build projects, collectively covering about 7118 square kilometres. The largest team has 2731 members around the world, all dedicated to reconstructing New York City! And why is PippenFTS so determined to build the Earth in Minecraft? "I'm just trying to beat the game," he says.
