It is with great sadness that we announce that ASSURE has lost one of our own.Last weekend, Jarlath O’Neil Dunn, Director of the Spatial Analysis Laboratory at the University of Vermont suffered what appears to be a massive cardiac event while doing what he loved, Nordic cross-country skiing with friends, in a place that he loved, the mountains of Vermont. His jovial personality, work ethic, love for life, everyone, and everything in it will be sorely missed and will leave a large void for all who knew him. His obituary can be found at: https://lnkd.in/g8McWGKs.The announcement of his death from his friends who were with him https://lnkd.in/ea3vGUwP provides some details and a tribute to this great man.Services will be held by the family and the University of Vermont community on Saturday, January 20 at 10:30 am at the Ira Allen Chapel, University of Vermont followed by a reception at the Livak Ballroom in the Dudley H. Davis Center on campus.Details for donations in lieu of flowers will be provided later at the memorial service. Please keep his family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts and prayers. He leaves his wife, three children, his mother, and three siblings. He is missed.

I believe that setting and working towards goals is an integral part of career progression. This year one of my goals is to complete a 2-day event in September. Day 1 will be 22 miles with about 6,000 feet of elevation and Day 2 will be 24 miles and about 5,000 feet of elevation. One of the reasons that I chose Rim2Rim is because 90% of the proceeds raised in this event go Alzheimer’s and ALS research. Those two devastating neurodegenerative disorders will continue to threaten to take the minds and bodies from so many of us.While fighting Alzheimer’s and ALS is very important, the other reason I’m doing this event is because I want to try to:1. Inspire others to reach new limits. We are NEVER too old to challenge ourselves to move beyond our perceived limits.2. Promote the importance of mind and body wellness. I’ve made brain health, sleep, and cognitive enhancement a priority for me in 2024.We all have causes that are near-and-dear to our hearts, but I've tried to think about something that can also build awareness and potentially drive people to consider prevention techniques. We are all bombarded with requests for donations. I also know that many people have been recently impacted by downsizing. So please don’t give it a second thought if you do not or cannot donate. However, if you have a few dollars please consider donating to a very positive cause that could impact many of our friends and family in the future.

A simple 5% endowment from Montanans could make a lasting impact on nonprofits, museums, public schools, hospitals, and other organizations. The Montana Community Foundation conducted a study named, “The Transfer of Wealth,” and calculated that from 2020 - 2030, $37 billion would be transferred from one generation to the next.If 5% of that $37 billion went from the pockets of Montanans into income streams for these various public entities, then they could make necessary repairs, adequately pay their employees or hire more, create new programs to generate awareness, or even keep the lights on for years to come. The World Museum of Mining has a small endowment that currently provides limited financial stability. Supporters can help grow this income stream by contacting the Montana Community Foundation. Did you know that in the UK, three of the most popular New Year’s goals are: 1. Doing more exercise, or improving fitness. Exercising is not only good for our physical health, but endorphins released as your heart rate increases help with our mental health too. 2. Spending less time on social media. Why spend time scrolling through other people’s memories, when you could be out making your own? Let’s face it, we could all do with less screen time and more time exploring the real world! 3. Volunteering, or doing more charity work. Volunteering can be a great way to meet new people, and we all know how difficult that can be as an adult in London. Why not spend some free time contributing to something that means a lot to us and meeting like-minded people at the same time? At FEAST, we have some great news. To combine all three of the above, we have set three exciting fundraising challenges in 2024! CLIMB: Increase your step count, climb to the highest point of the Peak District and take in a lungful of clean, crisp air on a 1-day 25k Peak District Trek, on 28 September 2024. TREK: Get even more steps in, see beautiful views, find fossils and explore amazing natural landmarks on a 3-day Jurassic Coast Trek, between 5 – 7 July 2024. CYCLE: Or get your heart racing and then reap the rewards of the magical sights of Paris at the end of a 5-day cycle from London to Paris, between 5 - 9 June 2024 or between 25 – 29 September 2024. More info on all three events here: https://lnkd.in/gSm5G6_R

As you picnic and enjoy Memorial Day weekend, take a moment to bow your head in silence and remember not only those who sacrificed their lives, but also their families who lost a loved one. Many posts across social sites say, “Happy Memorial Day.” I don’t get how ‘happy’ got associated to Memorial Day. 🇺🇸 How Memorial Day Became “Official” 🇺🇸In 1966, President Lyndon Baines Johnson declared there to be an “official” first celebration of Memorial Day. The resolution stated that the first Memorial Day was in 1866, in Waterloo, New York, celebrated at the behest of druggist Henry C. Welles and county clerk John B. Murray. This “official” foundation story of Memorial Day has largely been discredited as a myth. 25 towns currently claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day.More attested to as the first Memorial Day celebration in the North is the May 5, 1868, proclamation by General John A. Logan calling for a nationwide “Decoration Day.” He simply adopted the previously existing ceremonies of the American South and transplanted them to the Northern States. The first Memorial Day celebrated in the North took place on May 30, 1868. It is said that the date was chosen because it did not align with any particular battle, thus neither side could be seen as engaging in triumphalism. The new holiday spread like wildfire throughout the Northern states. In the first year of the official Memorial Day, 27 states observed ceremonies in 127 cemeteries. This ballooned to 336 cemeteries by the next year. In 1871, Michigan became the first state after the original 27 to make it an official holiday. By 1890, it was an official holiday in every Northern state. The popularity of the holiday led to the reinterment of almost 300,000 Northern war dead in national cemeteries.🇺🇸#memorialdayweekend #memorialday #memorialday2023 #honorthefallen #militaryappreciation #honorandremember
